Each packed meal costs Stop Hunger Now $1.50 to prepare. There are six meals or servings contained in each bag so wthat’s 25¢ per person! Your contribution covers the cost of the raw ingredients and ensures the sustainability of our program.

The public is invited to our second organizational meeting on Monday, February 22 at 7:00 at St. Elizabeth’s Episcopal Church, 2339 Grandin Road (near Patrick Henry).  We’ll see how far we’ve gotten and what needs to be done.  Please come and be part of this exciting ecumenical effort.

We had Methodists, Baptists, Episcopalians, Catholics, Presbyterians, Unitarians, “non-denominationalists” (is that a word?), folks from the Community School, Salem High School, Patrick Henry High School, Ferrum and Hollins, musicians, youth leaders, pastors and even a bishop, all coming together to see if we could support our Haitian brothers and sisters in this concrete way of preparing food.  What a lovely gathering it was.  I felt a “sweet, sweet spirit in the air.”  Didn’t you?  God must be blessing this project.

I have a big “to do list” and will get in touch with those of you who signed up to help with publicity, donations, etc.

In order to pack 140,000 meals and l/2 a container, we need 500 – 700 volunteers and $35,000.  This morning, I added up the figures again, and last night, as a group, we said that we could identify 927 volunteers and $31,650.  There was a strong sentiment that we might even be able to fill a full container once we got going (you do the math, it’s too scary for me).

Was there anyone out there who could get three of those “pallet jacks” Troy was talking about?

We are counting on lots of folks showing up with donations in addition to the monies we’ve pledged.  For many, this will add to their sense of commitment and ownership of the event.
